+ How does JXN tutoring work?

The tutor will meet with a student one-on-one, using practice tests to evaluate gaps in knowledge and formulate strategies for the individual student. Tutoring is most effective in a one-on-one setting, and so JXN Tutoring prefers to avoid scheduling one session for multiple students.

+ How long does a session last and how much does it cost?

Tutoring sessions are generally one hour. All appointments booked after June 11, 2021.

+ Who do I make checks payable to?

Effective March 14, 2016, please make all checks payable to JXN Tutoring. Cash is still accepted and cash payments are unaffected.

+ Do I need to purchase a specific workbook for studying for a standardized test?

Yes. Whenever possible, we work exclusively with books written by the test makers because they have previously adminstered tests (or, in the case of the SAT, practice material on Khan Academy). Invariably, practice tests written by test prep companies not affliated with the test are of lower quality, frequently have outright errors, and do not necessarily reflect the actual test content.

The books published by the test makers are:

  • The Official ACT Prep Guide OR The Official ACT Prep Pack. The Official ACT Prep Guide has been printed with a variety of (all red) covers. Any version is fine.
  • The Offical SAT Study Guide. Alternatively, the Official SAT Practice tests are available for printing at this link. These tests are the same as the ones in the book and will serve our purposes just as well.

Photos of the two books are displayed below and links to buy them from Amazon are included at the top of the page. The books are also available at major booksellers like Barnes and Noble or Books a Million. Please note JXN Tutoring has no affliation with The College Board, the ACT Corporation, or any bookseller, and includes these images and links for information purposes only.

+ Should I bring my computer?

For the SAT, yes, absolutely. Khan Academy has parterned with the SAT, and there is now excellent practice material online, for free. In fact, for the math sections in particular, we may recommend using the online material over (or in addition to) the published SAT guide.

+ How many sessions should I schedule for a certain test?

There is no good way to answer this question. Every student learns differently (indeed, that is why one-on-one tutoring is valuable) and it is impossible to know what sort of maximum benefit is realistic without meeting with a student several times.

However, it is common for students to see the greatest benefit to tutoring for the ACT/SAT in the first six to eight sessions, so that is often a smart number of sessions to plan for before a test.

+ Can we meet at a different location than the one listed?

At this time, no.

+ Do you tutor for the GRE/LSAT/GMAT/MCAT etc...?

We can definitely work with students on the GRE. Inquire by e-mail about any other test.
